FAQ

Q: Can I use Urchy to back up my phone and save $ on iCloud?

A: Yes! All iPhones are backed up by iCloud which is reachable at icloud.com. Their 2TB/mo plans are $9.99; 6TB = $29.99; 12TB = $59.99. At Urchy, 12TB = $48/mo and you don’t have to decide which tier to choose every month. 1) Log into your icloud.com account and download all files you want to back up including photos and videos. 2) Log into app.urchy.com and upload your files there. 3) You can now delete those same files from iCloud, saving you money (if you then decrease your iCloud plan). Keep in mind that only files on iCloud are viewable on your phone, so this is best for files you no longer want to view on your phone frequently. You can always view them on Urchy and shuttle them back and forth as needed. Whenever you get a new phone, you can pick and choose what to bring over from Urchy to iCloud and then it will show up on your new phone. Sometimes it’s easier to keep everything rather than sift through millions of photos. It can also be an easy way to make sure family members on the same iCloud family plan don’t have access to specific files you don’t want them to access.

Q: Can I use Urchy to back up old files on OneDrive, Google Drive, or Dropbox?

A: Yes! Our rates lower. Similar to iCloud, it makes sense to store any files you don’t use much on Urchy. Download old files onto your computer or phone, then log into app.urchy.com (you need to sign up for an account first), and upload your files there. Once they are up, you may delete the old files off your other device to save money. If you no longer need to share your 2020 school files but want to reference them later… this is a great way to do it. In the future we will also offer sharing options.

Q: Can I use Urchy to back up old photos, videos, and songs from multiple old computers I have?

A: Yes! It’s a good idea to do it soon too before the old devices break or are no longer accessible. It’s a great way to store old memories and stay organized. Hard drives only last 5-7 years, so storing your files on Urchy is a safer bet.

Q: What if I go over my TB tier in a month?

A: You are automatically billed in the next-highest tier, +$4 more. When you upload a file that will bump you up a tier, you will get a friendly pop up asking you if you are sure. It is then up to you to either delete some files off Urchy and then upload, or to click through and upload more files, automatically putting you in a higher tier for that billing cycle.

Q: Can my bill go down?

A: Yes, automatically. It adjusts real-time per month. Ex: you are at Tier 3 in month 1, having 2.8TB for $12/mo; you then delete files and are at 1.9TB. For the billling period of Month 1 you still pay $12 (max usage per billing period determines the tire) and then in month 2, as long as the max is < 2TB, the bill will automatically go down to $8/mo. It will still be on autopay until you cancel.

Q: How do I pay?

A: Once you create an account, you will see a button to set up payment. We set everyone up with automatic dynamic payments via Stripe.

Q: Is my data safe? What are your privacy policies?
A: Yes, safe in many ways. It is immediately encrypted in a way that only your login credentials have access to (and can decrypt) and stored redundantly in a decentralized fashion. We don’t share your data with anyone. We will share it with the FBI if required by law. We don’t share your name or anything about you with any entity at all. If anyone were to hack our servers, or if any employee were to look at your files, they would look like encrypted nonsense or not open at all.

Q: Where is Urchy based?

A: In Ashland, OR, registered under Culnane LLC.

Q: What is your cancellation policy?
A: Cancel any time. The cancel button is in your dashboard on app.urchy.com. You then have until the end of that monthly billing period +30 days to download and backup your data before we delete it from our servers.

Q: Is this hot or cold storage?

A: It is warm storage, not as fast as S3 yet, but not cold (slow) storage either. As we grow, we will offer various options at various speeds. Please be patient with us as we grow! Thank you!

Q: How long do I have to access my files after cancelling my subscription?

A: 30 days after your last billing period. Ex: You cancel on day 15 of your billing period. You have 15 more days until the end of your billing period (last bill) + 30 days grace period. In this case you would have 45 days to download all your files until they are deleted from our servers forever. We will email you friendly reminders before we delete all your files.
